It’s time again for the heavyweights of the darting arena to meet face-to-face in the much-anticipated PDC World Darts Championships held at London’s Alexandra Palace. With £1,000,000 in prize money and a chance to wrap up 2011 as a champion, this year’s competition is sure to yield some interesting darts betting dynamics.
Adrian Lewis currently holds the title of champion and will be looking to keep it that way. That’s not just a pipe dream – Lewis’ spectacular form of late, with appearances in the Premier League final and World Matchplay semis, means he is definitely one of the top five favorites. Why not the favorite? Well, that’s always going to be a problem with Phil Taylor around.

The Power has just been so dominant throughout the year, adding the 2011 World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, and the Grand Slam of Darts titles to his already stupefying list of accolades. He’ll be hungry to be become world champ, and he’ll be the man to stop at the Ally Pally. The question is, by whom?
Eric Bristow, former world champion himself, reckons that James Wade is the thrower to look out for when it comes to derailing Taylor. Wade is without doubt an extremely talented darts player, but his sometimes erratic play and inconsistent results make him a shaky pick this time around.

Gary Anderson is occupying second spot after Taylor in the odds table. The Scotsman has already proven his skills this year, taking the 2011 Premier League. As runner-up in this event the last time, he seems like a logical pick, but his devastating defeat to Phil Taylor in the Grand Slam of Darts, and his unreliable performance in general, should be taken into account before backing him with your bet.

Another big name that will probably prove to be a popular darts betting pick is Raymond van Barneveld. The man from Holland won the Championship in 2007, but it’s beginning to feel that his hay-days are slowly coming to an end. His draw lines him up with Taylor in the third round, and since it’s not likely that he’ll be able to overcome the Power, Barney’s World Darts Championship campaign will probably end there.

Despite now being 51 his game is still as accurate and punishing as ever as he has continued to demonstrate this year winning the World Matchplay, the World Grand Prix and the Grand Slam of Darts just a few weeks ago.

At odds of 9.00 defending champion Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis will be hoping to follow the success of his former mentor and win the title again whilst last year’s runner up Gary Anderson is also 9.00 to win his first ever PDC World Championship title. James ‘The Machine’ Wade is 11.00 to win although is not in the best form of late and his best performance was in 2009 when he reached the semi finals. Australian Simon Whitlock is 25.00 to go one better then in 2010 when he finished runner up to Phil Taylor whilst popular Dutchman Raymond Van Barneveld is also 25.00 to win his 6th World Championship.

Team Bonn v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Pre-Season Friendly

Matchday 6 is almost here, and being the last chance for those teams that haven’t already secured their places in the knockout round to do so, we’re expecting some very interesting Champions League betting. Let’s take a quick look at a few of the upcoming fixtures…

Chelsea – Valencia
Chelsea will be feeling the pressure as manager Villas-Boas looks to regain some of his team’s confidence, not to mention that of the club’s fans. With 4 losses in 7 games, Chelsea is on the verge of not making it to the knockout round for the first time since Abromovich took over the club. Anything but a win or a 0-0 draw against Valencia will mean a disappointing trip back to Stamford Bridge empty handed.

Arsenal – Olympiacos
The Gunners, already having secured their spot in the knockout stage thanks to another impressive performance by RVP against Dortmund, won’t be too worried about the result of this matchup. As far as the trio following Arsenal is concerned, that’s a whole different story. If Olympiacos manage a draw, and Dortmund beat Marseille, all three teams will be left with 7 points apiece. The final scores of these games will then be the deciding factor for who goes through to the next stage.

Man. Utd – Basel
United is in a far less comfortable position than they’re used to due to their recent display of uninspiring football. There’s no more room for mistakes, and they’ll have to produce a result in Switzerland if they are to move through to the next stage. Actually, a win will only put them in second place in their group which means drawing games against the big contenders like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter or Bayern Munich early on in the knockout stage.

Man. City – Bayern
Like Arsenal, Bayern have also already claimed their knockout stage spot. This could mean they’ll be less motivated for a win although with the way the German team has been playing recently, Manchester City should be ready for a full-on battle. And that’s not Roberto Mancini’s only worry. If City wins this match, it means they’ll also have to continue their efforts in the Europa League. Since it’s pretty obvious that the Premier League takes top priority, the Europa League will only act as a distracting hindrance for the Citizens at this point.
